Elinor Frey is an American-Canadian cellist, gambist, and researcher who has performed across the Americas and Europe in recital and with numerous chamber ensembles and orchestras. Her album Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco Cello Sonatas, is winner of a Diapason d’Or, and Early Italian Cello Concertos, won the 2023 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year.

At the heart of the repertoire of nearly all cellists, Bach’s cello suites are among the most appreciated works of music lovers around the world. The suites highlight how Bach is particularly adept at mixing particular characteristics of the cello. For example, because of its unique range, from the low bass to the soprano, the cello is able to create the illusion of multiple voices, a polyphony inspired by the use of Bach’s harmony and melody, wonderful techniques that intrigue the ear at every moment.

Elinor Frey returns to Elora to play Suites 1, 5 and 6 in the intimate acoustic of St. John’s Anglican Church.

"It opened with the well-known favourite 1st Suite, played with such original nuance that the audience audibly sighed between each of its six movements. Frey’s passion for all things cello-related, its history, composers who wrote specifically for it, as well as the instrument itself, informs her playing so that each bar expresses Bach’s intent with passion tempered with discipline and skill."
