Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time
Gryphon Trio
James Campbell, clarinet
Presented by Parry Sound’s Festival of the Sound, clarinetist James Campbell and the Gryphon Trio perform Olivier Messiaen’s stunning Quartet for the End of Time. Composed while Messiaen was a prisoner of war in Stalag VIII, the premiere took place in a cold barracks in January 1941. Since then, Quartet for the End of Time has become one of the most important pieces of 20th-century chamber music. James Campbell and the Gryphon Trio will introduce the audience to the work’s unique history with excerpts and explanations before performing it.
As John Terauds says, “Olivier Messiaen’s ‘Quartet for the End of Time’ can shake the foundations of your soul, especially when played as powerfully as by the Gryphon Trio and clarinetist James Campbell…”
